Bristol’s Patchway Studios set for expansion

Bristol’s Patchway Studios set for expansion

Patchway StudiosBristol-based Patchway Studios has won backing from a tranche of industry professionals and investors to quadruple its capacity over the next four years.

The studio is located in Patchway, north Bristol and currently offers 100,000 sq ft of flexible production space. It opened last year in response to demand for studio space in the south west.

The south Gloucestershire site offers 37,000 sq ft of flexible build space, 7000 sq ft ancillary space and offices, and 56,000 sq ft of backlot and parking.

The first studio is a converted commercial refrigeration store, on a large plot, with offices, prop stores and exterior production space. Projects to have utilised the facility include The Winter King, produced by Bad Wolf for ITVX.

The studios’ main investors SG Capital Partners has heralded the early success of Patchway as the start of a strategy to expand their offering to other sites in the UK and Europe.

The expansion at Patchway is being planned with guidance from several Bristol-based industry experts, Poppy Gordon Clark (location manager: Sanditon, Poldark), Monty Till (location manager: Outlaws, Bridgerton) and James North (production designer: A Discovery of Witches, Sanditon, The Winter King).

The three department heads have been appointed to Patchway Studios’ advisory board as independent consultants. The overall plan is to build on Bristol’s reputation as a film-friendly choice by establishing Patchway Studios as a creative hub; the studios team is also consulting with the British Film Commission, South Gloucestershire Council, West of England Combined Authority and the Bristol Film Office

Sam Glover of SG Capital Partners said: “Patchway Studios provides a solid base for world-class talent by providing flexible space suitable to house even the most ambitious productions. It’s hugely exciting to be fielding enquiries from a wide range of production projects looking to work in this wonderful part of the UK. Poppy, Monty and James are a welcome addition to the team and we are excited to work with them as we move forward with our international studio investment strategy.”

Gordon Clark added: “Patchway Studios offers not only a fabulous production base for set builds inside and out but also many diverse opportunities to film on location. With the picturesque Wye Valley a short drive away, the grandeur of nearby historic cities and the many period houses of the Cotswolds, plus dramatic coastlines in Somerset, Devon and Cornwall, it’s this perfect location that makes Patchway Studios so attractive to national and international creative teams.

“We are excited to be part of this studio project and providing industry advice early in its development, which can only benefit productions and crew.”
