Contemporary romcom The Road Trip filmed at The Bottle Yard Studios and in various Bristol locations.
Based on Beth O’Leary’s book and produced by 42 in association with PTIS – the international studio division of Paramount Global – the 6 x 45’ adaptation was filmed last year, starring Emma Appleton, Isabella Laughland, Laurie Davidson, David Jonsson and Angus Imrie.
Bristol Film Office supported the shoot, that used numerous backdrops across the city, including Totterdown, Armada House and various Clifton locations including Canning Road (where a car stunt was filmed using a spinning rig, with emergency vehicles arriving in the aftermath), Worcester Terrace, Berkely Square and street filming on Chandos Road.
Bar scenes were shot at the Gallimaufry Pub on Gloucester Road and café scenes in the Harbourside Kitchen at SS Great Britain on Gas Ferry Road. Filming also took place in Gran Canaria, Spain.
The Road Trip is written and created for television by Ryan O’Sullivan and Matilda Wnek (who also exec produce) and lead directed by China Moo-Young. Executive producers for 42 are Miriam Brent, Rory Aitken and Eleanor Moran. Nikki Wilson is producer and Kingsley Hoskins is co-producer. The Road Trip is the second Beth O’Leary adaptation by Paramount+ and 42, The Flatshare, that also filmed extensively in Bristol in 2022.
The shoot also offered eight local industry-entrants work experience on set, shadowing camera, costume, make up, script supervision and art departments. Students from Bristol Film School (boomsatsuma) also gained online work experience with the team.
Bristol Film Office recently released figures showing that filming on location in Bristol and at The Bottle Yard Studios contributed £30m to the local economy in the 2023-2024 financial year. Productions including Rivals, The Outlaws and A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder were among the contributors.
