Toby Jones starts filming Mr Burton in Wales
Filming begins in Wales today, 1 July, on Mr Burton, about how a young Richard Jenkins went on to become the world-famous actor, Richard Burton.
The feature centres on the relationship between Welsh schoolmaster Philip Burton (played by Toby Jones) and the young, undisciplined Jenkins (Harry Lawtey). The teacher spotted the talent in the boy, mentoring, supporting and tutoring him; the bond became so strong that Jenkins adopted the surname of the man he considered a father.
Lesley Manville also co-stars as Ma Smith, Philip Burton’s landlady and friend; Aimee-Ffion Edwards and Aneurin Barnard play Richard’s sister and brother-in-law who cared for him following his mother’ death. after the death of his mother.
Director Marc Evans is calling the shots from a screenplay by Tom Bullough and Josh Hyams. Ed Talfan and Hannah Thomas produce for Severn Screen, with Josh Hyams producing for Promise Pictures.
BBC Wales and Ffilm Cymru Wales, in partnership with Creative Wales, are financing Mr Burton.
