The BBC has ordered a third series of gangland drama This City Is Ours, ahead of the launch of series two this Sunday.

Created and written by Stephen Butchard and produced by Left Bank Pictures, the BBC1 eight-part series will begin filming primarily in Liverpool in 2027.

Series one launched in March 2025 and has drawn an average of 6.3m viewers to date, with the first episode reaching more than 8.4m viewers, according to BBC data. Almost 3m people streamed the finale ahead of transmission.

According to Barb data from overnights.tv, the eight-parter averaged 1.1m (9.6%) overnight viewers, rising to 4.3m after 28 days.

Series one starred Sean Bean as the boss of a cocaine smuggling enterprise, with James Nelson-Joyce playing his right-hand man. A power struggle begins between him and the family son who wants to take over. Set between Spain and Liverpool, the second series will see an old gangster return from prison demanding compensation as the power struggle continues.

Casting details for series three are yet to be revealed.

The third series will be exec produced by Charlotte Moore, Rebecca Hodgson and Sian McWilliams for Left Bank Pictures, with Butchard and Jo McClellan for the BBC.

Butchard said: “Following the quite breathtaking response to series one, myself, the cast and our wonderful crew were all determined not to drop the ball and endeavour to deliver an even better series two.

“No spoilers, but I’m hoping this fantastic early commission from the BBC for a third series is an indication that we may have come close to doing just that.”

Hodgson said: “Our amazing cast and crew, led by lead director Saul Dibb, have stuck with us for two series, and it’s testimony to their talent that we have been commissioned for a third series.”

Director of BBC Drama Lindsay Salt added: “Stephen Butchard and the team at Left Bank have built a world filled with ambition, authenticity and heart that has been embraced by millions.”

Sony Pictures Television serves as distributor.
