For those of you who didn”t catch it on TV… the big winner at the 2012 Orange British Academy Film Awards was silent movie The Artist which won seven BAFTAs including Best Film, Leading Actor for Jean Dujardin and Director and Original Screenplay for Michel Hazanavicius.

Meryl Streep won Leading Actress and the movies Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Hugo, The Iron Lady and Senna won two BAFTAs each. However The Artist”s triumph came both in front of the camera and behind. In its 7 awards were Original Music, Cinematography (Guillaume Schiffman) & Costume Design (Mark Bridges).

Other winners in the more technical categories included Mark Coulier, J. Roy Helland & Marese Langan for The Iron Lady in the Make-Up & Hair category and Gregers Sall & Chris King for editing. Hugo won two BAFTAs in Production Design and Sound while Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 was awarded the BAFTA for Special Visual Effects (Tim Burke, John Richardson, Greg Butler, David Vickery from post-production house MPC).

The most poignant moment of the evening came when Peter Straughan picked up the award for Best Adapted Screenplay (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) on behalf of himself and recently deceased wife Bridget O” Connor.
