Filming is due to get underway this week (w/c 18 March) on Bad Apples, a satirical thriller starring Saoirse Ronan.

Swedish writer-director Jonatan Etzler is at the helm, calling the shots from a screenplay by Jess O’Kane.

The dark comedy, which marks Etzler’s English-language debut, is an adaptation of Rasmus Lindgren’s debut novel De Oönskade. Pulse Films produces.

The story centres on Maria, played by Ronan, a teacher whose attempts to inspire her young students are upset by one unruly pupil whose behaviour soon spirals. After a series of bad decisions, Maria ends up imprisoning the pupil in her home, and her class flourishes…

Oskar Pimlott, who produces for Pulse Films, told Deadline at the time of the announcement: “Jonatan has an unparalleled ability to create hilarious and horrifying cinema from the uncomfortable truths of human nature. We couldn’t be more excited that his unique perspective is going to collide with the extraordinary depth and talent of Saoirse Ronan in this special film.”

Fiona Weir is the casting director; Jacqueline Abrahams is the production designer. Filming takes place in the Bristol area.
