Outlander has been recommissioned for another two runs, with Series 3 already in pre-production.

Starz confirmed that Series 3 and 4 will be based on Diana Gabaldon”s third and fourth books of the canon, Voyager and Drums of Autumn.

CEO of Starz Chris Albrecht said of the two new series commissions: “Outlander is like nothing seen before on television. From its depiction of a truly powerful female lead character, to the devastating decimation of the Highlander way of life, to what is a rarely-seen genuine and timeless love story, it is a show that not only transports the viewer, but inspires the passion and admiration of its fans.”

The series has been well-received by critics and audiences alike – with three 2016 Golden Globe nominations including Best Drama Series, the opening episode of Series 2 set a new Starz record for an original series/season premiere.

Ronald D Moore executive produces the show, which is filmed in a converted warehouse in Wardpark, Cumbernauld. Wardpark Studios’ owners recently applied for planning permission to expand the existing space by around 30,000 sq ft.

The show has been held up as a flagship vehicle to show off Scotland”s great locations and crew, adding to the weight of the call throughout the industry for a dedicated studio facility to be built in the country.
