Mendes, Iannucci comedy The Franchise wins full series order at HBO

Sam MendesFollowing a successful pilot, HBO has given a full-series order to The Franchise, a comedy that takes a sideways look at the art of making superhero movies.

Sam Mendes directed the pilot, marking his first US scripted TV project; he also exec produces alongside Pippa Harris, Nicolas Brown and Julie Pastor for Neal Street Productions; Armando Iannucci for Dundee Productions; Jon Brown, and Jim Kleverweis.

Brown, who wrote the pilot, serves as showrunner.

The Franchise comprises 30-minute episodes and centres on the crew of an unloved movie franchise, and looks at the chaotic process of putting together a superhero universe.

Himesh Patel and Aya Cash star alongside previously announced cast Jessica Hynes, Billy Magnussen, Lolly Adefope, Darren Goldstein, Isaac Powell, Richard E. Grant, and Daniel Brühl.

Amy Gravitt, executive vice-president, HBO programming, head of HBO & Max comedy series said:  “With a deft touch only he can bring, Sam has brilliantly captured the romance and the reality of filmmaking today.

“Jon is superb at sending up worlds we think we already know. Together, with Armando, they have delivered a truly hilarious comedy ensemble. I can’t wait to see more.”
