Guy Ritchie’s MobLand: how Unit’s VFX enhanced “the raw energy” of the Paramount+ drama

Guy Ritchie directed a cast led by Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren when MobLand started filming in the UK in November 2024
Unit Film & TV provided online VFX for Guy Ritchie’s crime drama MobLand, set against the backdrop of London’s dangerous underworld.
Produced by 101 Studios, Showtime / MTV Entertainment Studios, and Hardy, Son & Baker for Paramount+, MobLand stars Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren, and started filming in early November last year at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden.

The ten-episode drama was created by Ronan Bennett and director Ritchie (they also exec produced); it follows a murderous power struggle between two warring crime families, the Harrigans and the Stevensons.
Others in the director’s chair included Anthony Byrne, Lawrence Gough and Daniel Syrkin, with exec producers including Keith Cox, Nina L. Diaz, David C. Glasser, Jez Butterworth, Kris Thykier, Ivan Atkinson, Tom Hardy, Dean Baker, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin and Bob Yari.
A key criterion for Unit was to deliver seamless online VFX that would enhance the drama, raw energy and action sequences of the story.
Unit VFX producer Tania De Sousa headed the team, with online VFX lead Fraser Cleland, and additional online VFX artists Rob Ellis, Ben North, Alec Eves and Ian Baker.
De Sousa said: “Working on MOBLAND has been an exciting opportunity for our team to bring our expertise in VFX to a gripping and visually dynamic series. Our focus was on enhancing the tension and raw intensity of the story, ensuring every moment resonated with the high stakes and complex emotions of the characters. It’s been a pleasure collaborating with such a talented production team to help bring Guy Ritchie’s vision to life.”
Cleland added: “With MOBLAND, the challenge was to make sure every visual effect served the raw energy and grit of the series. From intricate details to bigger impact shots, we worked hard to ensure the VFX heightened the drama without overpowering the story. It was fantastic to collaborate with such a creative team and see the visual elements align with Guy Ritchie’s bold vision.”
