Firth Is Crowned King Of The Golden Globes

All of the pre-event hype proved spot-on as Colin Firth was named Best Actor In A Motion Picture, drama at the Golden Globes for his portrayal of King George VI in The King’;s Speech. However the film lost out in all of its other categories thanks to the success of The Social Network.

To secure his Golden Globe, which is somewhere between an Oscar and a BAFTA in terms of prestige, Firth had to beat off challenges from Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network), James Franco (127 Hours), Ryan Gosling (Blue Valentine) and Mark Wahlberg (The Fighter). He is now a strong tip to win the Best Actor Oscar next month.

The other top awards went to The Social Network (Best Film), Natalie Portman (Best Actress in a Motion Picture, drama for Black Swan) and David Fincher (Best Director for The Social Network). The Best TV Series award went to Glee, the smash hit musical comedy from Fox, while Martin Scorsese’;s Boardwalk Empire was named best drama.
