A lengthy shoot gets underway later this month on McMafia, BBC One”s hefty new drama inspired by journalist Misha Glenny”s bestselling investigative book about global organised crime.

The drama comes from Cuba Pictures and has been written by Hossein Amini and James Watkins with a writing team including David Farr, Peter Harness and Laurence Coriat. Watkins will direct all eight episodes.

The series stars James Norton as Alex Godman, the English-raised son of Russian exiles with a mafia past who finds himself drawn into a dangerous international underworld of corruption, money laundering and ruthless intelligence agents.

McMafia is executive produced by Nick Marston, Ben Hall and Robyn Slovo for Cuba Pictures, Matthew Read for BBC One and Amini, Watkins and Glenny. Paul Ritchie produces.
