We can now bring you further news on upcoming ITV drama Beowulf, which will be filmed in the North East. Created by James Dormer, Tim Haines and Katie Newman and set to begin production in March, the show, based on Scandinavian legend, has been given the greenlight to shoot at the former Eastgate Quarry site in Weardale.

According to local press, the large set is scheduled to include a mead hall, twenty houses, a forge, mining walkways and jetties. Professional painters and carpenters have been hired to the build the set as of next month with up to 30 members of crew currently being booked to manage the workload.

In a statement ITV commented: “We plan to make use of as many local businesses as we can. We have already made contact with the local quarries, timber yards, builder’s yards and plant hire companies and we will work with them accordingly.”

Statistics assembled by Northern Film and Media suggest the sizeable production, to be delivered as 13 x 60 episodes, could bring a local spend of around £25,000 per day to accommodate and cater for the cast and crew.
