Netflix orders surfing drama from Baby Reindeer producer
Clerkenwell is shooting Breakers in Western Australia with Antony Starr leading cast
Netflix has unveiled a surfing drama from Baby Reindeer firm Clerkenwell Films and a documentary exploring the life of F1 star Michael Schumacher.
Breakers, which has started production in Western Australia, follows two backpackers sucked into a seemingly perfect surfing community by a mysterious leader, played by Antony Starr (The Boys).
The eight-part series, penned by Pete Jackson (Somewhere Boy, The Death of Bunny Munro), will be the biggest production to date in Western Australia, employing more than 100 people and injecting more than A$19m (£10m) into the local economy, according to funding body ScreenWest.
BBC Studios-backed Clerkenwell is producing with BBC Studios Productions Australia. The latter is behind the recent remake of Ghosts for Network 10 and Paramount+, and Reckless for SBS, both of which were shot in Western Australia.
Mary Nighy (Industry) and Ng Choon Ping (What It Feels Like for a Girl) are attached to direct, with Gavin O’Grady (This Way Up), Petra Fried (Baby Reindeer), Wim De Greef (The End of the F***ing World) and Jackson exec producing.
The show is set to wrap filming in the Western Australian town of Busselton in June and will debut on Netflix globally, with a date yet to be confirmed.
Growing German slate
The streamer has also revealed a raft of shows from its German division, including feature doc Schumacher ’94.
The doc tells the story of one of the most legendary Formula 1 seasons when Michael Schumacher won the first Grand Prix of the season in Brazil at the age of 25, setting the stage for his unprecedented career.
Mediawan-owned Leonine Documentaries is producing, with Christin Freitag attached to direct.
Netflix’s German slate also includes spy thriller Unfamiliar, Warner Bros. International Television Production’s drama about an aspiring rapper, Crap Happens , and the second season of Murder Mindfully, which is based on Karsten Dusse’s novel of the same name.
The German line-up was the latest to be unveiled via a series of local events held by Netflix around the world over recent weeks, following a similar push in Spain earlier this month.
In related news, the streamer has also confirmed a fifth season of The Lincoln Lawyer, prior to the launch of its fourth run.
The 10-part fifth season is to be based on Resurrection Walk, the seventh book in Michael Connelly’s Lincoln Lawyer novels. A+E Studios is again attached.
