Production gets underway in Wales today, 29 July, on a big-screen adaptation of Hamnet, starring Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley.

Eternals director Chloé Zhao is at the helm, calling the shots from a screenplay she wrote with Maggie O’Farrell, upon whose novel the film is based.

The story centres on Agnes (Buckley), the name given in the book to the wife of William Shakespeare (Mescal), as she tries to come to terms with the loss of her only son, Hamnet.

The feature comes from Hera Pictures, Neal Street Productions and Amblin Entertainment with Liza Marshall producing for Hera alongside Pippa Harris and Sam Mendes for Neal Street. Filming takes place on location in Wales.

Neal Street is also busy in production on another big feature, The Magic Faraway Tree, that started production at Shinfield Studios in mid-June, starring Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy.
