EXCLUSIVE: Ryan Gosling to film space feature at Shepperton Studios
Ryan Gosling will shoot major new feature Project Hail Mary at Shepperton Studios in the UK, with filming starting in early June for Amazon MGM Studios.
The space-set film is directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, from a screenplay by Drew Goddard based on the book by Andy Weir. Gosling, Weir and the directing pair also produces alongside Amy Pascal, Aditya Sood and Rachel O’Connor.
The story centres on Ryland Grace (Gosling), an astronaut who wakes from a coma to find himself alone on a space station with no recollection of how he got there. As his memory returns, he realises he had been on a mission to travel to the Tau Ceti solar system, millions of miles from home, in an attempt to save the Earth from another Ice Age.
Deadline recently reported that Anatomy of a Fall star Sandra Hüller would be joining Gosling in the film, which is being shot for IMAX.
The expansion at Shepperton Studios was completed earlier this year, providing an additional 17 sound stages, 548,000 sq ft of production and workshop spaces and two backlots. Amazon MGM Studios has taken nine new stages and Netflix will be taking eight in addition to their existing 14 leased stages on the original Shepperton site.
Chris Bird, managing director, Prime Video UK said at the time of the completion announcement: “It feels fitting that, ten years from the launch of Prime Video, we’re beginning our tenure in brand new facilities at Shepperton Studios. It’s so exciting that some of our most loved series and movies around the world will be made right here in the UK, including season three of our fantastic UK Original The Devil’s Hour.
“Shepperton Studios have long been synonymous with world class filmmaking, and we’re delighted to continue supporting and investing in the UK creative industries.”
