ITV to document Theresa May’s premiership

Theresa MayITV has greenlit a documentary exploring Theresa May’s time as Prime Minister.

Theresa May: The Accidental PM (w/t, 1 x 60’) is produced by The Slate Works and goes behind the scenes of No 10 during her turbulent three-year tenure which came about after David Cameron’s resignation following the Brexit referendum in 2016.

It also covers the Grenfell disaster, the Windrush scandal and her relationship with President Trump - as well as her life after power as a backbencher, before the recent announcement that she would be stepping down as Maidenhead MP at the next election.

The film features contributions from key advisors and politicians including Suella Braverman, Gavin Barwell and Amber Rudd.

The documentary is produced and directed by Sam Collyns and executive produced by Neil Grant and Adam Wishart.

Grant said: “Theresa May has never given access like this before. Full, frank and revelatory, this is a rare insight into power and politics at a time of turmoil, turbulence and betrayal.”

Tom Giles, controller of current affairs for ITV, added: "We wanted to produce a film that not only provides a vivid insight into a tumultuous period of recent British history, with ramifications that are still continuing, but that explores a woman who became a leading figure in British politics  in over a quarter of a century as MP, Party Chairman, Home Secretary and Prime Minister."
