DI Ray S2 begins filming in the West Midlands

DI RayThe second series of police drama DI Ray begins production next week (w/c 24 April) in Birmingham and environs, starring Parminder Nagra as DI Rachita Ray.

Jed Mercurio’s HTM Television makes the 6 x 60’ series for ITV, with the second run centring on the murder of a high-profile criminal, which then ignites racial tensions that cause a personal conflict for Ray as she fights to prevent a turf war on Birmingham’s streets.

Birmingham plays a key role in the show; creator May Sondhi was born and raised in the city. Series One (that comprised four episodes) filmed many scenes in the city centre.

Locations included Snow Hill station, Livery Street, Three Snow Hill and the last remaining Georgian square in Birmingham, St Paul’s Square.

Series Two is written by Sondhi, Ben Tagoe and Sarah Deane. The lead director is Nirpal Bhogal, with the series produced by Roya Eslami and executive produced by Madonna Baptiste and Mercurio. Filming runs for around 10 weeks; Production Intelligence subscribers have had access to key details on the drama, including production HoDs and advance shoot dates.

When the recommission was announced, Sondhi said: “I am so excited to be able to work with Parminder again and all the team at HTM to bring back a series two that goes deeper, darker and twistier than Spaghetti Junction…Thank you so much to ITV1 and the viewers for making it happen.”
