Digbeth Loc Studios welcomes Steven Knight drama
The first major drama to move into the newly-opened Digbeth Loc Studios in Birmingham begins filming next week, 7 November.
Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight – a well-known champion of the region in which he grew up, the West Midlands – has written Two Tone, about the birth and subsequent rise of the eponymous music genre that exploded in Birmingham and Coventry in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
The drama comprises 6 x 60 episodes, with filming set to run for around four months.
Kudos produces alongside Stigma Films and Nebulastar. Knight (pictured) also exec produces with Karen Wilson, Laura Conway, Martin Haines, Matthew James Wilkinson, Phil Temple, Nick Angel and Tommy Bulfin.
Knight said at the time of the official commissioning news: “This is a project that”s literally very close to home and I”m developing characters and themes that are set in the early 80s but hopefully are very contemporary. Of course, the soundtrack will be sensational.”
Executive producer Wilson added: “Steven”s passion for this project is palpable so I couldn”t be more excited to be making it for BBC One. Set in the West Midlands, against a moment of real cultural and historical progression, it will be compelling, diverse and will have a rocking soundtrack to boot.”
The location of the new studio, a personal project of Knight”s for the last few years, further raises the profile of the Digbeth area of Birmingham as a creative hub. The BBC”s flagship cooking format Masterchef is set to relocate to the studio from 2024, and Knight”s planned Peaky Blinders feature film will eventually shoot there.
