C4 renews prison drama Screw

ScrewChannel 4 has renewed prison drama Screw for a second run, with Nina Sosanya and Jamie-Lee O’Donnell returning to head the cast.

The series is from STV Studios and creator Rob Williams and centres on the staff and inmates of C Wing, Long Marsh. Faraz Ayub, Stephen Wight, Ron Donachie and Laura Checkley are among the returning supporting cast.

The series was the first drama to use Kelvin Hall in Glasgow when filming took place last summer on Season One, after a major, three-storey set-build was undertaken at the historic 1920s site; Series 2 will also be based at the former exhibition venue.

The exec producers are Sarah Brown of STV Studios alongside creator Williams; Roanne Bardsley and Ciara Conway complete the writing team.

Caroline Hollick, head of Channel 4 drama, said of the recommission: “We’re thrilled to welcome back the staff and prisoners of C Wing. Rob has created an iconic Channel 4 prison series with a fantastic cast and we can’t wait to jump back into the drama, humanity and humour of life behind bars in series two.”

Brown, creative director of drama at STV Studios, added: “It’s been thrilling to see audiences take Rob’s fantastic characters to their hearts so readily and in such big numbers. We couldn’t be happier to be partnering once again with the brilliant team at Channel 4, to welcome viewers back to the mad world that is C Wing, and delivering even more gripping and thought-provoking stories for officers and prisoners alike.”

Williams said: “I’m absolutely delighted to get the opportunity to dig deeper into the complicated characters on C Wing - we have a lot more stories to tell - and to continue working with the incredible team at Channel 4.”
