The planned studio could provide more then 400 production jobs on the small island.

A planning application has been submitted to Isle of Wight Council for a new film and TV studio to be built on the island.

The proposal is for the facility, to be called Medina Studios, to be built on a 14-acre site at Kingston Marine Park in East Cowes, overlooking the River Medina. It is posited that the studio could offer extensive marine filming opportunities due to its location.

Medina Studios would include four permanent sound stages, two workshops, production offices and parking for more than 100 vehicles.

It is estimated that the development would provide around 800 jobs overall, with 400 in the production sector, 250 in the supply chain and 150 in construction during the build. A decision to sell the council-owned land to Medina Studios was approved nearly two years ago, and the sale is currently going ahead, according to local outlet Isle of Wight County News.

Well-known talent agent Duncan Heath, former Pinewood exec David Godfrey and Datasat Media’s Neil Blewett are behind the proposals for the site, in collaboration with Serious Stages. Isle of Wight-based Andrew White Planning Consultancy is handling the application.

A supporting document submitted to the council reads: “The facilities at Medina Studios will provide the key to unlock a treasure trove of cinematic potential. Medina Studios will not only function as weather cover to support the production schedule but can also draw upon a plethora of unused locations, on its doorstep, ready to support a multitude of scripted content.

“The island is generally warmer than the rest of the UK, its micro-climate producing an average of 1,925 hours of sunshine a year. No longer will shooting on the Island be weather-dependent, seasonal or inflexible.”
