End Of Taggart: ITV Drama Overhaul

ITV is axing long-running Glasgow-based detective drama Taggart. The decision came after the 28th series of the show averaged just 4m per episode on ITV1.

ITV said: “Taggart has been one of ITV’;s most enduring dramas but, reflecting the demands of our audience and as part of the creative renewal of the ITV1 schedule, our priority is to invest in original drama for the channel. ITV1 broadcast five out of the top 10 new dramas on any channel last year, including the most popular new drama in five years, Downton Abbey.”

Taggart debuted in 1983 and looked like it might end in 1994 when the lead actor Mark McManus died. But it managed to survive that shock by building the storyline around new characters. Now Scottish broadcaster STV, which produces the show, is again looking at ways to keep the brand alive: “STV is exploring a range of options for Taggart. We are committed to the brand and recognise the continuing popularity of this long-running series.”

The most likely route would be to find another domestic broadcaster for the show. But failing this, STV is looking at whether the show could be saved by securing commitments from the international market. STV”s distribution partner DRG says it is exploring options for Taggart with STV.
