Avengers filming targets Scotland
Marvel is reportedly considering plans to film scenes in multiple locations across Scotland over the coming months.
Filming is based in Georgia in the US, but the production team is reportedly also planning to spend around £10m shooting in Scottish locations.
The Scottish leg of the shoot is likely to be location-based given that the country does not offer large-scale studio facilities.
Local production is also likely to be relatively small-scale as the £10m figure is a small fraction of the film’s overall budget.
In comments to Herald Scotland, the Association of Film and Television Practitioners Scotland said that securing scenes for the Avengers should not be taken as an indication that the country is necessarily growing its international appeal.
“Having a Hollywood blockbuster filming in Scotland every half-decade or so is not indicative of a healthy screen sector,” said a spokesperson for the organisation.
“Ten years ago Scotland was second only to London in screen production activity but Scotland is now a poor sixth behind London, Wales, Northern Ireland, Manchester/Leeds and Bristol.”
Wardpark Studios near Glasgow – currently home to the romantic drama Outlander – has been mooted for expansion by the Scottish government. There is also a separate private plan to develop a studio facility on the outskirts of Edinburgh, although approval for this scheme has been continually delayed.
Marvel now largely bases its film productions at Pinewood Atlanta Studios in the US state of Georgia, but the studio has filmed extensively in the UK before. Avengers: Age of Ultron and the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie were both based in London, as was the more recent Doctor Strange.
